Do you need wudu to make dhikr?

No. Dhikr on the tongue does not require wudu.

Saying SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar or La ilaha illallah needs no ritual purity, no particular place and no direction to face.

Holding a tasbih does not require wudu either. The strand is an object, not a mushaf.

Why this question comes up

Because a different question sits next to it and the two get merged.

The discussion about ritual purity concerns reciting Qur'an and touching the mushaf. That is a real scholarly discussion with genuine positions in it.

Dhikr is not the same act. The short phrases of glorification are not Qur'anic recitation, and the discussion about the mushaf does not extend to them.

The answer on this site

Mufti Salim Qasmi: dhikr needs no wudu. You may say SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, La ilaha illallah, Astaghfirullah, salawat and dua in any state.

Wudu belongs to salah, and to handling the mushaf. Those are the places the requirement actually sits, which is why the question gets attached to dhikr by association rather than by any ruling about dhikr itself.

What needs no wudu

The everyday dhikr almost everyone means by the question.

  • SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah.
  • Astaghfirullah.
  • Salawat on the Prophet ﷺ.
  • Dua of any kind.
  • Holding or using a tasbih, beads or a counter.

Where the discussion actually is

Two places, and neither is ordinary dhikr.

Reciting Qur'an in a state of major impurity is discussed by scholars, and positions differ.

Touching the mushaf without wudu is discussed separately again.

Some phrases that people count are Qur'anic verses — Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal-wakeel is Quran 3:173. If that matters for your situation, ask a scholar rather than reading a general page.

Is wudu better anyway?

Being in a state of wudu is generally encouraged, and there is nothing wrong with preferring it.

But preferring something is not the same as requiring it, and treating a preference as a condition stops people making dhikr at exactly the moments they most easily could.

Walking, commuting, waiting, lying awake — none of those needs wudu.
