The salam formula after salah
The dhikr after fard prayer does not begin at SubhanAllah.
Two things come first: Astaghfirullah 3 times, then a short formula naming Allah as As-Salam. Both are narrated from Thawban in Sahih Muslim 591.
Almost every tasbih app starts at the 33s and skips both. This page is about the part that gets dropped.
The order after the salam
Straight after the salam, before anything else.
Then the sequence continues into the 33s.
- Astaghfirullah, 3 times: Sahih Muslim 591.
- The salam formula, once: Sahih Muslim 591.
- SubhanAllah 33, Alhamdulillah 33, Allahu Akbar 33, completed to a hundred with the tahlil: Sahih Muslim 597a.
- The longer wording said after every fard prayer: Sahih al-Bukhari 844 and Sahih Muslim 593.
What the formula says
It means: O Allah, You are As-Salam, and from You is peace. Blessed are You, Possessor of majesty and honour.
It addresses Allah as As-Salam, the source of peace, using the root the salam that just ended the prayer comes from.
That is why it sits exactly here. You have just said as-salamu alaykum, and the first thing said afterwards returns peace to where it came from.

The complete post-salah sequence
The narrated sequence has more in it than most apps carry.
Astaghfirullah 3 times and the salam formula once, both from Sahih Muslim 591. Then 33 SubhanAllah, 33 Alhamdulillah and 33 Allahu Akbar, completed to a hundred with the tahlil, from Sahih Muslim 597a. The longer closing wording after every fard prayer is in Sahih al-Bukhari 844 and Sahih Muslim 593.
The three Quls now close this site's guided sequence with verified Qur'anic text. Ayat al-Kursi is available as a separate verified preset but not as a guided step, because its post-salah narration is outside the source collections this site can link to directly.
Why apps drop it
Because it does not fit the shape of a counter.
A tasbih app is built around a repeating loop: tap 33 times, advance, tap again. A step said once and a step said 3 times are awkward in that design, so they get trimmed, and 2 narrated steps quietly disappear.
This site's guided sequence runs 9 steps rather than 4 for exactly this reason.
Putting the two steps back
It costs a few seconds.
After the final salam, stay where you are and say Astaghfirullah 3 times before you move. Then the salam formula, once.
Only then go on to the 33s. That is the order in Muslim 591 followed by Muslim 597a, and nothing about it is difficult.
Does it have to be exactly three?
The hadith says 3, so 3 is the narrated number.
Saying more is not a problem. Saying fewer means you have not done what the narration describes.
The salam formula is said once.
What comes after
